Providence TrinityCare Hospice Foundation TrinityKids Care
This project funds TrinityKids Care the only dedicated pediatric hospice program that provides in-home hospice care to terminally-ill children in all of Los Angeles and Orange counties. Founded in 1977, TrinityCare Hospice was a pioneer in providing hospice care to adults with life-threatening illnesses. In 2001, TrinityKids Care was established to provide specialized hospice care for infants, children, adolescents and their family. What started with 3 children grew to serve over 100 in 2009. The team of nurses, social workers, chaplain, medical director, and community volunteers provide support for these children and their families during this difficult journey at all hours of the day and night it is a true privilege to give this care so that children with life threatening illnesses may live well and die gently. There is often a discrepancy between what the services cost. Reimbursement for hospice services is the same for both pediatric and adult care. However, the complexity and acuity of the children is severe. The cost of caring for children is significantly higher due to specialized equipment and the higher cost of medications needed to reach comfort in children with dramatically different diagnoses than adults. While a portion of these services is paid by private health insurance and Medi-Cal, the reimbursement does not fully cover the cost of care for every child. To fully live our mission of compassionately caring for the vulnerable, sick and dying, we also care for children with no insurance. We also provide Necessities of Life. Some of our patients find their financial resources exhausted by a long illness. Some parents need to stop working to care for their dying child. Necessities of Life provides basic essentials to our most impoverished families. These may include rent, phone or utility payments, food, and medical co-payments. This only is possible through philanthropic support.
