DisAbility Awareness Foundation Tools For Success
This project funds the free assembly program "Tools for Success" which will present over 25 programs reaching 20,000 K-12 students. The diverse and talented speaker teams will share a message of inspiration, tolerance, and self esteem emphasizing character building, interpersonal skills, and a healthy lifestyle. Nearly one million Californians, crossing all demographic lines, cope daily with a variety of disabilities. Of that group, 625,000 California children have special needs. The DAF believes that persons with disabilities have valuable information to provide and can positively share their own skills and motivation with children and youth. They serve not only as models for those with disabilities, but for the physical, mental, and social well being of everyone. In addition, California school’s “full inclusion” policy provides a necessity for teaching children at a young age to respect and value others regardless of their differences, and is a lifelong lesson in tolerance, acceptance, and community building. The DisAbility Awareness Foundation wants to expand their programs this year to reach more K-12 students in Orange County. The DAF plans to use the "Tools for Success" program offers motivational assembly programs to all of these schools during Disability Awareness Month (October) and throughout the school year (July-June). Books and media material will be provided to each school. Along with teaching and empowering today's youth, the DAF trains and motivates persons with disabilities to achieve their goals and become active participants in their communities. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the project will be in the numbers of persons served, in the number of speakers trained, the number of assemblies and the number of students attending assemblies. Follow up materials will be designed for teachers. Records, of persons served, will be kept, and School administrators will offer follow up assessments and observations.
