Volunteer Center Orange County RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program)
This project funds the mobilization of 354 senior and retired volunteers who provide nearly 70,000 service hours valued at $1,569,397 annually in the Cox Service Area. (California volunteer hour valued at $23.29). In times of deep cutbacks, RSVP provides vital human resources and outcomes otherwise not afforded to critical community organizations. RSVP seniors demonstrate their power to give back, enhance their own lives, and create positive community change for a greater quality of life. A 2006 study by the Corporation for National & Community Service found that volunteering leads to better health and that older volunteers are the most likely to receive physical and mental health benefits from their volunteer activities. RSVP volunteers provide their time and talent for the greater good of us all. They organize neighborhood watch programs, tutor children, feed the hungry and homebound elderly, teach English, preserve the environment, promote the arts, and serve in many other ways. In the Cox Service Area, RSVP partner agencies include Ocean Institute, AIDS Services Foundation, South Coast Literacy Council, Girl Scouts, Orange & Tustin Senior Centers, and Laguna Beach, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, San Clemente, and Orange Police Stations. As testament to their impact, a benefiting agency stated: “Our RSVP volunteers serve three meals a day to 80 homebound seniors in Orange. They are core to our operations, making sure these individuals are nourished.” RSVP volunteer Bill had this to say about his volunteerism: “Right now the organizations we are serving are hurting for players. I do maintenance on the Tallships and the work is always there! Activities are increasing; county systems are laying off, the economy creates even more of a need. I get out of house and assist wherever I can. These organizations need a recruiting blitz and those seniors need a lifestyle change. RSVP does that.”
