Child Guidance Center, Inc. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), South Orange County Program
This project funds no-fee Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for military-connected families and other at-risk families living in South OC cities. Services will be provided at Child Guidance Center's (CGC's) newly opened Mission Viejo site. PCIT teaches specific skills to parents with children ages 2-10, giving them the opportunity to practice these skills during therapy sessions, and to continue practicing skills until mastery is achieved and the child's behavior is improved. Observing the parent-child interaction from behind a one-way mirror, the MA/PhD-level PCIT therapist provides live-coaching to the parent through a wireless earpiece on how to handle behavioral issues immediately at the moment they occur. PCIT is appropriate for children ages 2-10 who: have difficulty in school, pre-school, or daycare; are agressive toward parents, siblings and other children; refuse to follow directions; have frequent temper tantrums; swear; are defiant; and/or may be on medication to manage their behavioral problems. Some 50 studies in the literature report PCIT's effectiveness treating children with severe behavioral problems and/or who are abused: CGC's pre- and post treatment outcome measurements reflect significant changes in the number and severity of children's problems and the lessening of parental stress (Source: Timmer, S. Ph.D., "CGC's 04-08 PCIT Outcomes", UC Davis Medical Center, Feb. 2008. PCIT is 1 of 3 "best practices" for the treatment of child abuse.
