Ocean Institute Adopt-A-Class
This project funds the Adopt-A-Class program, which offers fully funded programs for Title I schools to have their students experience hands-on, marine science and maritime history programs. Due to state educational budget cuts, more schools are unable to provide these hands-on learning experiences to our youth. While Orange County is often represented as a coastal paradise, in fact it is made up of mostly urban, inland communities, most of which are hampered with severe educational challenges. The OC Department of Education has 28 districts serving 500,000 K-12 students. Over 38% of the students qualify for the federal free meal program; 30% are English Language Learners. The objective of the grant from Cox Cares is to “adopt” an entire grade from a local Title I school. Through these hands-on programs, students become tallship sailors, research scientists and oceanographers. At the same time, students develop positive, cooperative learning abilities. Once a grant is received, we match the funds with an underserved grade. Sponsorship pays all course and transportation costs for the adopted grade. You will be invited to accompany the students as they visit the Ocean Institute. After the field trip, the students will send heart-warming thank you notes to Cox Cares expressing their appreciation. As a contributor, we will recognize your participation through our website, donor wall, and press releases. The Ocean Institute's goal is to create future stewards of our oceans and get students inspired about science. All educational programs meet required State Standards and teach science concepts that can be easily grasped by students when presented in the context of the ocean. This exposure to the fascinating ocean ecosystem, guided by our trained instructors, will stimulate students' interest in science and help to broaden participation of underserved populations in the field of science where they are severely underrepresented.
