Cox Cares Awards Ten Orange County Non-Profits to Aid Local Efforts

Recently, Cox Cares honored ten nonprofit organizations that make a difference in our local community by awarding a total of $55,000 in grants.

Projects that were funded include a technology program for blind children, a homeless shelter in South Orange County and a program that helps military families deal with immediate deployments. (See sidebar for complete details on winners.)

In order to determine the finalists, judges evaluated each organization based on program quality and its impact on youth, seniors and education. Judges were comprised of a committee of Cox associates, community and business leaders. New this year, Cox Cares invited the public to cast an online vote for the finalists it deemed most deserving of a grant. This ensured that the funds were allocated to organizations dedicated to making life better for Cox’s local customers and associates.

“In challenging economic times, it is exceptionally heartwarming that we can support these programs that do so much for the people who need it most in our community,” said Duffy Leone, senior vice president and general manager of Cox Communications, Orange County. “Most of this money was donated by our local employees, and I’m really proud of their generosity.”

Since 2000, Cox Cares has donated more than $600,000 to more than 95 local nonprofit organizations through in-kind and direct cash support, much of which is derived from the generous contributions of nearly 1,000 employees based in Rancho Santa Margarita.
